InfoMedics Study Highlights Satisfaction and Effectiveness of ADHD Drug
Poster, Research Presented at 161st Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association
READING, MA – InfoMedics, Inc., the patient feedback company, recently presented a poster detailing parents' perceptions of the effectiveness and tolerability of the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drug lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (LDX).
Overall, parents who were surveyed reported high satisfaction with their children's experiences with LDX, notable reductions in ADHD symptoms and good tolerability. The research, known as "The New Start Survey Program," was conducted through online and automated telephone surveys prior to the start of each child's treatment and then again three and six weeks later, on average 24 and 51 days, respectively.
The poster was prepared by InfoMedics' Senior Director of Analytic Services Donna Kerney, PhD, in conjunction with personnel and Key Opinion Leader physicians from Shire Development. Kerney's co-author, Dr, Michael Manos, presented the poster at the 161st Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Washington, D.C., from May 3 to 8, 2008. The research was supported by funding from Shire Development Inc.
"The New Start Survey Program was designed by clinical personnel to provide information to prescribing physicians about parents' impressions of LDX treatments for the management of their children's symptoms of ADHD," said Kerney. "This kind of data is crucial for both the physicians who are seeking more information about the effects of the medications they prescribe and the pharmaceutical companies who want to better understand consumers' reactions to their products."
This particular survey began with a collection of baseline information, including:
- When the child was diagnosed
- Whether or not he or she had ever tried an ADHD medication
- What symptoms were the most bothersome and at what time of day they occurred
- Level at which ADHD symptoms interfered with various activities
The survey questions asked three and six weeks later addressed changes to ADHD symptoms, the time at which they occurred and how they interfered with activities. These follow up questions also asked about improvements and satisfaction since starting LDX, as well as convenience and tolerability, and the parents' intention to have the child continue with the treatment.
Parents reported significantly less interference by ADHD symptoms with school activities, family interactions, homework and social interactions after three and six weeks of their children taking LDX. Eighty-seven percent of parents also said there were improvements in their child's most bothersome ADHD symptom and 85 percent said their child's most bothersome time of day was better with use of LDX. Both the most bothersome symptom and most bothersome time of day were identified by parents on the initial survey. Eighty-three percent of the parents said they would have their children continue the LDX treatment.
