InfoMedics' Physician Survey Presented at ISPOR's 11th Annual International Meeting
Patient-Reported Outcomes Data Increasingly Play a Role in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Patients
Philadelphia, PA – InfoMedics, Inc., the leader in patient-physician communications programs, today announced from the ISPOR 11th Annual International Meeting, the results of an in-depth survey of 98 physicians from six different specialties. As detailed in a presentation entitled "Physician Impressions and Uses of Patient-Reported Outcomes Data," the surveyed physicians reported positive impressions and usage of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in their care of patients.
"Since only patients themselves are in a position to articulate how they feel, PROs are a vital part of effective medical care," said Paul LeVine, vice president, analytic services, InfoMedics and study co-author. "While intuitively, this information would seem to be of value to physicians, little is actually known about how physicians perceive and use patient-reported data in the course of clinical practice. As a result, we felt it important to ascertain physicians' views on patient-reported outcomes data obtained through patient surveys."
The study evaluated four different InfoMedics programs that were designed to provide feedback to physicians about their patients' experiences with different medications. Patients who were prescribed a given medication voluntarily completed surveys about their symptoms and the impact of symptoms on their lives before and after using the medication. The prescribing physician received a detailed data report summarizing individual patient responses. A sample of physicians who participated in at least one of these programs was interviewed about their impressions of this feedback.
Overall the study found that patient-reported data, viewed in the context of clinical presentation, play a role in the diagnosis and treatment of illness, and physicians are interested in programs and initiatives designed to give them that information. Specifically, the respondents identified data about patient well-being and satisfaction as the most valuable types of information. The majority of physicians surveyed indicated that they would incorporate PRO reports into their patients' medical records and/or discuss the reports directly with their patients. Some of the more common concerns about patient-reported data articulated by physicians included the accuracy and reliability of the data, particularly if patients were trying to give the "right" answer, as well as the need to be very explicit in the description of the data gathering methods and/or survey content.
